If you love Rc, you know the significance of a battery pack. The type of batteries you choose, how well your pack is assembled and how efficiently you charge them are all prominent aspects to powering your Rc vehicle. Sure, you can buy a battery pack pre-assembled, but you can also build your own and get the delight of designing and powering your own vehicle.

The first thing you need to do is when you rule to put together a battery pack is what you are powering and how much juice you need. You also need to think about the following:

1. Look at the chassis of your vehicle. The kind of vehicle doesn't matter as much as the amount of space in which you have to maneuver. The batteries may need to be oriented in a flat pack, a clustered pack or as both. You should also think about the distribution of weight in your vehicle - either the battery weight is going to be distributed in a side to side or back to front manner. 2. Look at the motor powering your Rc vehicle. Depending on the power requirements, you'll be able to rule how many batteries or cells you need. This is also when you can rule the type of batteries you'll use - if you want to keep your NiMh batteries or upgrade to LiPo.

3. Determining your voltage is assuredly a simple matter of addition. A suitable cell voltage is 1.2v, so wired in a series - 12 batteries will add up to 14.4v - which would power an 14.4 volt Rc electric motor.

Next, you'll need to gain your battery pack supplies - so here's a sample shopping list. Remember, we're assuming we're creating a battery pack with 14.4v, as in the example above:

o 12 Batteries or Battery Cells

o 12 Battery Bars (you can order battery bars in bulk if you plan to build more than one pack and save $)

o Wire: You'll want a higher ability 12 gage with a high shore count. This type of wire, with these characteristics will be more flexible which is ideal as well as being more effective for power transmission.

o 80-100 Watt Soldering Gun. You'll want a gun because you can be more exact and quicker - this is indispensable because of the heat sensitivity of batteries. The faster and more exact you can be, the less likely you'll be to damage the battery.

o 60/40 Solder. This is higher ability - also prominent for quick and literal, work and avoiding battery damage.

o Flux. This is a chemical cleaning agent that removes oxidation from metal to facilitate soldering. You can use liquid or paste flux when assembling a battery pack.

o Shoo Goo or Goop. This fast drying adhesive will be used to bundle the batteries together.

o Battery Pack Assembly Jig - optional. These assembly devices align the batteries properly and facilitate a tidy battery pack. The batteries end up basically looking like cord wood - tidily bundled.

o Soldering "Helping Hands" - optional. These devices allow you to hold things in place while you solder.

o Another elective timesaver is to get a "Helping Hands" accessory for your soldering station.

o Multi Meter. You need a good multimeter to test voltage and polarity.

o Wire strippers and Wire Cutters. These tools will help you handle, strip and properly cut your 12 gage wire.

o The final component is the shrink wrap which will go nearby the whole assembly and keep it tidy. You'll also need a heat gun to heat and shrink the wrap.

So, you've identified how to orient your batteries and how many you need - now you get to work on assembly. For this example, we're assembling 12 battery cells - 6 down one side and 6 down the other.

Once you recognize where the batteries are going in relation to your chassis and how they are going to be laid out, you can begin. For this example, let's say we're doing 6 down one side and 6 down the other side.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, the ultimate goal here is to be running wire from the safe bet terminal of your first battery to the safe bet terminal on the electric Rc motor and then running a wire from the negative terminal on the last battery in your pack to the safe bet terminal of your other battery pack, thereby creating a completed circuit.

This mean you need to have adequate wire to reach from the safe bet terminal of your first battery to that terminal and likewise from the negative to faultless the circuit with your other battery pack so bear that in mind.

Orientation. Align your first cell so that safe bet is pointing "upwards" and negative is pointing "downwards" and then reverse the next battery so it's opposite on down the line. If you purchased the battery assembly jig, this is when you'd use it to align your cells and hold them in place.

Adhere. Stick all the batteries together with your fast drying adhesive to they are in order and aligned properly.

Flux. Use your flux now on the connection points.

Connection - Use your battery bars to join together your cells. You'll need to heat up your soldering gun and heat up the battery bar. Using the bar protects the battery and when the flux starts to bubble, you employ your use of solder. The goal is to Not heat the battery itself. Heating the battery is not only counterproductive, since if you damage the battery it won't work, but also hazardous because the cell might explode if overheated.

You'll want to faultless the same steps for the remaining battery connections. You are connecting the negative to the safe bet over and over again. You'll then be ready to join together wiring to your battery pack.

The wires need to be pre-tinned which mean you need to strip off a quarter inch of the protective plastic wiring sheath, use the flux to clean them - apply the flux liberally - heat your solder gun and then heat the wire and flow the solder into the wire until thoroughly saturated. You'll also want solder on the batteries so the solder will act as the connector with the battery.

Once the two, six cell battery packs are complete, you'll want to employ the shrink wrap to gain them - and you'll have your faultless battery pack! Now you'll be able to power and fly your Rc helicopter, plane, boat, car or truck with no problems!

The Rc Helicopter

Leonardo da Vinci created on paper, at least with the first helicopter, and the very first piloted helicopter was invented by Paul Cornu in 1907, however, this make was not successful. Another Frenchman, Etienne Oehmichen built and flew a helicopter 1 kilometer in 1924. Igor Sikorsky is considered to be the "father" of helicopters not because he invented the first. He is called that because he invented the first successful helicopter, upon which future designs were based. http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blhelicoptor.htm

So where when did the Rc model helicopter begin? Well I do not know who is credited with the First Rc Model Helicopter, but it was in the 70’s that the Rc Helicopter revolution in fact began.

For the most part, they were all Nitro powered, using standard Model Airplane engines (40 and .60 size) and 4-6 channel airplane radios.

Using a 4 channel radio to control the 5 functions of a model helicopter was quit unique in it challenges and results. What they did was used a “Y” connector for the throttle and pitch servo. Then you mechanically set up the throttle and pitch curve on the heli.

In the ‘70’s there were 2 basic type of Helis, the teetering head, fixed pitch and soon after came the collective pitch. And just like today, some had direct drive tail rotors systems while other went with belt drive.

The first of these Heli’s where hard to fly, had very poor control and lacked any tail gyros, radio mixing or any of the modern connivances that make today’s Helis fly so well and easy. We even had to mechanically set the lead/lag of the main blades, until we just left off 2 of the 3 bolts on the main blades and let them seek there our lead/lag.

But the Rc Model helicopter matured speedily and by the ‘80’s the Rc Model Helicopter could fly quite nicely, the radio manufacturers started manufacture good Helicopter Radios, the Helicopters themselves had the modern style Bell/Hiller control system, single point Main Blade attachment for self Lead/Lag and gyros became common place. Direct drive or belt drive tail rotors still were used.

In the ‘80’s and ‘90’s the Far East began to originate gorgeous Models of all sizes. And the “Ready To Fly” models became common place. The race was one and the things they started doing with the Rc helicopter was only diminutive by ones imagination.

I would think that this century is know as the “Age of Electrics” and today you can get an electric Helicopter in any size, (small adequate to fix it your hand) to 40-60 size.

And can they ever fly, they are competing with your fuel choppers, only quiet and no smoke, no beginning tool needed and are fully 3D capable.

So if you’re flying interest lean toward the rotary wings birds, check out the new electrics. They make then so uncomplicated today that you can buy one, open the box, and payment the batteries and fly, even if you have never flown before!

Esky Honeybee 4Ch Rc Helicopter narrate

Well, where to start with this one... This has got to be one of the coolest yet frustrating things anyone has ever bought me. Let me explain... My girlfriend bought me this for Christmas from Buzzflyer.co.uk for around £110, as soon as I opened it I was like a kid at 10 years old again. On the box it said for indoor/outdoor flight so naturally the box was flung open and the battery was level on charge ready for a bout of flying round the living room.

What's in the box?

1 x 12V Battery lead (to charge the helicopter battery from a 12V car battery etc)

The Esky Honeybee is billed as an RTf helicopter (Ready To Fly, for those not in the know) which means that in law all it should need is a quick charge and off you go.

Naturally being a bloke there was no need to read the instructions so I just plugged the battery into the beast and off I went. It very speedily became apparent that this is undoubtedly Not an indoor toy, in fact it is not even a toy at all come to mention it.

Obviously what's the first thing you do when you get a toy helicopter? You got it, stick on maximum revs and see what happens! That's where this thing went from 0 to lethal in less than a second. It looked so innocent sat on the floor till I whacked the throttle up then I seriously began to fear for my safety. The downdraft from this thing was extraordinary inspecting the size, what looked quite small in the starting now seemed relatively large once the blades were spun up, and what a noise! To put it into context; have you ever seen hypnodisc on robot wars? Now dream that but flying uncontrollably around your living room at head height, brown pants occasion I think you'll agree! I ducked for cover as the beast ploughed level into the wall, slid down, and proceeded to have what looked like an epileptic fit on the floor. My first venture and already a broken part (albeit minor and not detrimental to operation). "Ah" I thought, "probably better off outside".

So out I went, only a puny breeze so I concept to myself "perfect" - mistake whole 2.

Full throttle once again (this time from a safe distance). The helicopter took level off and was abruptly carried by the puny breeze at a rate of knots till it was out of sight. I ran over to it only to find it finding like a wet dog on a cold day, all bunched up and twitching.

This time I had broken any major parts so I packed up my helicopter and walked home in shame to figure out what I was doing wrong and order some spare bits (which weren't cheap). "Suppose I best read the manual" I thought.

Ah... Apparently you have to set the helicopter up first as regards to the balancing of the main rotor, paddles, and the weight distribution so that the centre of gravity is directly below the rotor shaft. This is very prominent if you want any kind of stable flight. Instructions for this can be downloaded here.

The next thing you have to do is set up the gain and trim of the tail rotor; this is so that while throttling up the main rotor the helicopter will remain stable and pointing in the same direction.

With these tasks perfect I then took the helicopter to an empty squash court with a friend who had also bought a honeybee helicopter (although he opted for the 6 channel public pitch model, boy did he regret that later).

This time I was dead careful, I gradually increased the throttle until it was very light on the ground then applied a short burst just to get it in the air and out of the ground effect (this is other thing I learned, after experimenting trying to get the honeybee to hover in my kitchen it would permanently drift to the left no matter what controls were applied. After a bit of study I discovered that it's something to do with the way the air flows when the rotor is so close to the ground that makes it act in this way. Hence the term 'ground effect'. The only way you can get the helicopter into a stable hover is to speedily apply the throttle in a short burst so that it rises out of the ground effect to about knee level where it will become more stable.)

It then became apparent that I was out of my depth, I concept being only a 4 channel helicopter it couldn't be that hard and I would have become a scholar of flight before the day was out. That day turned into about a month of practice, any high-priced crashes, and 2 body injuries from the main rotor and I'm still not great although I've become quite good at a stable hover. Flying a Rc helicopter is a lot more difficult than it looks!

On the same day of the first proper maiden flight in the squash court, my friend opted for the same initial response as I had when first getting the heli out of the box (it was the first time he had ever turned it on) only this time he didn't get away with a minor breakage as with mine. He pushed the throttle to maximum and with the 6 channel Honeybee having more power it took off like a trident missile level into the squash court wall and folded up like a spring loaded deckchair. It was a write-off. Less than 1 second total flight time and it cost him a fortune (not to mention hours of build time and bleeding thumbs) just to get it back to a cheap flying health only to have a similar incident the second time round! He was nearly in tears and I tried to be sympathetic but I couldn't help crying with laughter, bad I know but the comedy of the situation was hard to ignore!

My advice would be don't buy this particular Rc helicopter if you have never flown one before. The damage caused by learning to fly it will drive you insane not to mention the cost and time to rebuild it. If your serious about it get some advice before you buy one and try to get some proper training from person who already knows how to fly Rc helicopters. Trust me it will save you a lot of headaches not to mention a hefty heal bill. One plus side of the honeybee Fp (fixed pitch blades) is that the battery lasts ages. On a full charge the Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery gives a good 30 minutes of continuous 'attempted' flight.

The principle behind an electric helicopter is a good one and I admire what Esky have tried to do by creating a cheap offering but to me the build capability was a bit lacking, only very puny knocks would cause something to break which means the novelty wears off very quickly.

If I had to buy one again I would go for the Micron V2 which is a tiny indoor helicopter the advantages of this is that the build capability looks substantially better than the honeybee, and the size is such that you can precisely fly it in your living room which means that any major crashes and knocks are likely to be absorbed by soft things such as sofas and carpets.

Conclusion

Great idea in principle, but the build capability is a bit lacking.
